Our workshop, ‘Friday Tea Reception on Teaching Exam Skills’ was successfully held on 22 April 2016. The workshop consisted of two parts. In the first part, Mr Leo Lai, the English Panel Chair of Tuen Mun Catholic Secondary School shared with us how his school deals with the learning gap between S3 and S4 and improves students’ exam skills. In the second part, we invited three English teachers, Ms Emy Wong, Ms Van Leung and Dr Fred Chan to talk about how they make use of Athens Exam Skills materials to prepare students for the exam. In the first part, Mr Lai spoke in favour of treating S3 and S4 as one learning stage instead of bridging the gap between them. He generously demonstrated his teaching materials and students’ work. Using elective modules as the core curriculum, his school introduces short stories and drama in the junior forms and holds activities such as alumni sharing sessions, workplace exploration and mock interviews for senior-form students. He concluded by confirming the need for an authentic and encouraging environment for English learning. In the second session of the workshop, Ms Wong, Ms Leung and Dr Chan spoke about their experience of using Athens Exam Skills materials to prepare students for different HKDSE exam papers. They were particularly appreciative of the double-page spread reading texts and Exam practice sections in the series, and the Weekly News Archive updated regularly on the website. |
